Insomnia Can Contribute to Depression and Heart Disease

Date posted: january 25, 2012 08:40pm

Getting a good night's sleep is mentally beneficial in helping us function and be alert to handle our daily life, but many may not realize that sleep has an impact on our physical health as well. Not sleeping enough can be very detrimental to our bodies; our heart and other organs rely on our body's restful state to recuperate and repair cell damage. Insomnia is one of the leading reasons for difficulty getting proper rest at night; the sleep disorder is usually triggered by stress and interferes with our general well being. An Orange County sleep center can help diagnose sleep problems, contact a center for a consultation if you are having difficulty falling or staying asleep.

Many people who suffer from insomnia may see the disorder as a blessing, being able to function with less sleep allows for more time to get work done. Eventually this pattern catches up to all insomniacs and they are forced to seek treatment or medication to help fall asleep. There are many different treatments aimed at sleeping better, Ambien and Lunesta are just a few medications that promise a restful night, but these sleep aids may become habit forming and addicting, they are not recommended for long term use.

It is best to find the underlying cause for sleep disorders since we know how crucial it is to our overall health. Studies show that people who do not sleep well have a much higher chance of developing depression or anxiety and twice as likely to suffer from heart related disorders.  Most people generally associate insomnia with just a part of life and do not seek treatment right away, in fact, many opt for over the counter medications that may be ineffective or damaging when over used.

Instead of dangerous medications with side effects, some people have found relief with psychiatry; cognitive behavior therapy has shown promising results for insomniacs, the course which consists over several weeks helps retrain the brain to become drowsy near bedtime. Stress related feelings usually keep people from falling asleep, so the treatment helps to teach patients to change their environment to one conducive for sleep. It makes sense that a serene bedroom setting would help ease the mind at night; committing to a routine, making the bedroom a quiet environment, and meditation all help calm the mind for sleep. If you need more advice or tips for naturally falling asleep, ask an Orange County sleep center for advice.

The most important thing we can do for our minds and bodies is get enough rest, proper sleep allows for us to function at our optimum level and feel good during the day. Insomnia that lasts for more than a few nights may be a sign of a bigger problem, you should be concerned if you are consistently feeling overly tired during the day; A sleep center in Orange County may recommend a variety of therapies aimed at helping you feel better.
