Sleep Treatments: gain some knowledge

Sleep apnea is a condition that affects one when he or she is asleep. This condition causes missed breaths and pauses in breathing while asleep. Sleep apnea comes in three forms. The most common being the obstructive kind that affects well over eighteen million people in America today. It involves the person suffering from either total or partial collapse of the airway. This condition is nothing to smile about as it can pose a potential threat to one's life and has been known to cause strokes, hypertension and cardiovascular ailments. The sleep treatment for this type of sleep apnea is recommended on a case to case base with surgery becoming imminent in very severe cases. Patients with mild cases can be recommended to take on certain lifestyle changes or visit a sleep center for analysis of sleeping cycles.

Diagnosis

Polysomnography

Polysomnography is utilized for the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea. This is a test that determines whether the condition is in existence or not. The extent at which the condition has degraded can also be established using this approach. The strategy has also been used to diagnose other forms of sleep disorders such as narcolepsy.

This procedure entails the attachment of electrodes to the eyelids, chin and even the scalp. The purpose of the test is to record any signs that it receives for the electrodes while asleep and also while awake. These allows for comparisons. The main characteristic of this test is the recording of your heart beat and the duration of time that it would take for one to sleep and commence with the REM stage. Videotaping the procedure is advantageous as one's reactions can then be easily recorded. The data will then be used to make a diagnosis of the condition. It is worth mentioning that Polysomnography is a painless process that is carried out by qualified health care providers. It is the most common diagnostic used to determine the presence of sleep apnea.

CPAP

The use of pressurized air while sleeping is one of the most common approaches used to treat obstructive sleep apnea. The working principle behind this method is to push the air down in to the path during the night hours and consequently ensure that the air path remains open. For this approach to be effective, one must adorn in a mask while asleep. Continuous positive common air pressure commonly referred to as CPAP is among the common kinds of sleep treatments that are inclusive of a humidifier, inhalation that is changing, air heater and air pressures for exhalation.

Other sleep treatments

The main cause of sleep apnea is the blockage of the air path while one is asleep. The solution to stop this is eliminating the obstruction. Sleep treatments such as tissue reduction is an approach that can be used to achieve this. The reduction is mainly done with the use of radio frequency that is also referred to as Somnoplasty. This is the procedure whereby the extra tissue is decreased so as to ensure that the airway remains totally clear. This includes some parts of the throat, soft plate and the tongue. The size of the tongue is reduced so as to ensure that the space for the airway remains open and hence lowering the risk of blocking the air path while one is asleep.

The surgical sleep apnea solution is used as the last alternative. Surgery is recommended when the specialists feels that the air pace should be increased. Uvulopalatoplasty is a good example of one such procedure. It is the total elimination of the uvula or in some cases it is reduced in size. If the complication is caused by nasal blockage, surgery can be used for septum alignment. Other forms of beneficial sleep treatments used include Adenoidectomy and Tonsillectomy.

With the above information in mind, it proves that sleep apnea can be very dangerous and therefore if noticed it should be addressed urgently. More research is being carried out in this direction to get more advanced forms of sleep treatments.
